Healthy teeth - a key to vitality and performance

A pain-free set of teeth is not only crucial for your horse's optimal feed intake, but also for its well-being and performance. Our specialized dental department combines state-of-the-art technology with years of experience to provide your horse with the best care - preventative, diagnostic and therapeutic, at your stables or in our clinic.

Dental disease can have a significant impact on your horse's quality of life, as it can lead to pain, restrict food intake and also significantly affect digestion and general well-being. Regular dental check-ups are extremely important for the early detection and treatment of dental diseases. That is why our dental center combines preventive services to avoid dental problems wherever possible with diagnostic and therapeutic treatments to provide your horse with the best possible care.

What behavior indicates dental problems?

Rapid diagnosis and treatment is the best way to help your horse with dental disease. You should therefore pay particular attention to the following behavioral changes:

  • Eating behavior - your horse shows problems chewing, eats slower than usual or you observe reluctance to pick up or chew food
  • Salivation - your horse produces excessive saliva and/or coughs up balls of food
  • Dental problems - you notice mouth odors, visible misaligned teeth or increased girth
  • Weight loss - your horse loses weight despite normal feed intake, a symptom that is particularly common in older horses
  • Behavioral abnormalities - chewing on solid objects

If you notice such changes in behavior, we are the right people to contact to quickly and reliably determine the causes of the symptoms and help your horse quickly with the appropriate treatment.

An overview of our services

Dental examination and diagnosis

  • Oral examination - visual inspection of the teeth and gums for injuries, inflammation or discoloration
  • Tooth alignment - examination for misaligned or protruding teeth that can lead to problems
  • X-rays/computed tomography - to assess the tooth roots, tooth alignment, jaw bone structure, maxillary sinus system and temporomandibular joints
  • (Saliva analysis - in case of suspected inflammation or infection)

Our examinations allow a precise and rapid diagnosis of dental problems, the basis for effective treatment!

Dental cleaning and care - a program to prevent dental diseases

As with humans, prevention proves to be a blessing in equine veterinary medicine, as preventive care prevents diseases and not just those of the mouth.

  • Tooth grinding - Regular removal of sharp edges that could injure the gums
  • Removal of tartar - to prevent gingivitis and periodontitis
  • Care and control of the teeth - Inspection for damaged teeth that could impair chewing activity
  • Treatment of altered and/or inflamed interdental spaces

Regular teeth cleaning is very important for your horse's well-being in order to prevent dental disease and pain.

Dental treatment for illnesses

Thanks to advances in medical technology, 3D images of the jaw are now possible, enabling us to make diagnoses and provide therapies based on them that were only available in human medicine years ago. The symbiosis of state-of-the-art medical technology and decades of experience is the basis of our treatment concepts:

  • Correction of misaligned teeth - correction of hooks and points that put strain on the jaw or hinder eating
  • Tooth extractions - In the case of severely damaged or broken teeth that can no longer be saved, the tooth is removed under sedation using the latest techniques and gentle procedures with as little stress and risk as possible.
  • Root canal treatment - Infections or abscesses at the root of the tooth are removed after clinical examination (in complex cases using an endoscope and CT scan) either conservatively with antibiotics in the case of bacterial infections or surgically in the case of irreversible damage.
  • Treatment of gum disease - Gingivitis ( inflammation of the gums ) or periodontitis ( inflammation of the periodontium ) are serious diseases which, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss and other health risks. In the case of gingivitis, the dental plaque causing the inflammation must be removed using hand instruments and ultrasound. In the case of periodontitis, the gum pockets must be mechanically cleaned of deposits in depth, if necessary with laser and ultrasound. In severe cases, tooth extraction may be necessary.

Equine dentistry not only ensures oral health, but also has an impact on your horse's vitality and the entire organism, making it an essential part of our clinic!

Specialized treatment for older horses

As your horse ages, the health risks increase and so does the need for specialized geriatric prevention and treatment concepts.

  • Dental problems in old age - Older horses can develop altered tooth structures or tooth wear, leading to problems with eating or digestion.
  • Adaptation of feeding - Advice on the correct feeding of older horses that have difficulty chewing
  • Regular check-ups - As older horses are more susceptible to dental disease, we offer regular check-ups to detect problems early.

For older horses, we offer regular dental check-ups specifically tailored to their needs to maintain their quality of life for as long as possible.

Prevention and dental care advice

In addition to regular teeth cleaning, we are also on hand to advise you so that you can support your horse on the path to health in the best possible way:
