When is surgical treatment necessary?

• Acute injuries (e.g., deep wounds, fractures, opened joints, etc.)
• Diseases of the musculoskeletal system (e.g., chips, arthroscopy)
• Colics and other acute emergencies
• Tumors or malformations
• Eye and dental problems requiring surgical correction

Our clinic is equipped with a modern operating area and offers both minimally invasive and open surgical procedures.

Overview of Equine Surgery Services

Orthopedic Surgery and Joint Surgery

Diseases of the musculoskeletal system are a common cause of lameness. Our specialists perform the following procedures:

• Arthroscopy – Minimally invasive joint examination to remove bone fragments (chips) or to treat cartilage damage
• Tendon and ligament procedures – Management of tendon injuries, fasciotomies, and desmotomies
• Fracture treatment – Management of bone fractures using the latest osteosynthesis methods
• Bone cysts

These procedures improve healing chances and maintain the horse's athletic ability.

Soft Tissue Surgery and Tumor Operations

Soft tissue surgical procedures are often necessary to treat tumors or malformations:

•    Laparoscopy – Minimally invasive abdominal surgery, e.g., for the castration of cryptorchids, tumor surgeries (removal, sterilization), or kidney removal
•    Castrations (conventional or laparoscopic)
•    Removal of skin tumors (e.g., sarcoids, melanomas, squamous cell carcinomas)
•    Hernia corrections (umbilical, inguinal, or scar hernias)
•    Surgical wound care for severe injuries or poorly healing wounds

Colic Surgery and Emergency Operations

Colics are among the most dangerous conditions in horses. When medication is insufficient, emergency surgery is required.

Our colic surgery services include:
•    Laparotomy (opening of the abdominal cavity) to examine and treat intestinal twists, displacements (e.g., displacement of the colon over the spleen-kidney ligament), or obstructions
•    Intestinal resections (removal of damaged sections of the intestine)
•    Postoperative intensive care and follow-up for optimal recovery

Thanks to modern anesthesia and intensive monitoring, many horses have a good prognosis after colic surgery.

Eye and Dental Surgery

Some eye diseases or dental problems require surgical treatment; here are a few examples. We also perform all other possible surgical interventions on the eye, head, and jaw:

•    Vitrectomy – Vitreous body surgery to treat Equine Recurrent Uveitis (ERU)
•    Eyelid surgeries – Correction of tumors or misalignments
•    Extraction of wolf teeth, molars, or incisors when they are broken or infected
•    Corrective procedures for dental misalignments

Process of a Surgery in Our Clinic

The process of surgery in our equine clinic begins with a comprehensive pre-examination and diagnostics. We use the latest imaging techniques such as X-rays, ultrasound, CT, MRI, scintigraphy, or endoscopy to ensure precise surgical planning and to determine the best possible treatment for the horse.
Before each procedure, anesthesia and preparation are performed. Depending on the type of operation, we either use general anesthesia or local anesthesia to ensure a safe and gentle execution. Our specially trained veterinarians and anesthetists monitor the horse throughout the anesthesia phase.
The actual surgical procedure is carried out by our experienced specialist team under sterile conditions. Modern and minimally invasive techniques are employed to keep the burden on the horse as low as possible.
After the surgery, there follows a waking phase and intensive monitoring. The horse is brought out of anesthesia in our specially equipped recovery box under continuous observation to detect any potential complications early and ensure safe recovery.
For optimal recovery, we create an individual follow-up and rehabilitationplan. This includes medication treatments, physiotherapeutic measures, as well as housing and movement management to enable quick healing and the best possible return to everyday life or sports activities.
